In the spirit of curiosity and discovery, our lab members participated in the 2024 Darwin Day event, a vibrant celebration of biology. This year’s event, held at the Leach Teaching Gardens on the TAMU campus, drew over a thousand of members of the public and students of all ages, eager to explore the curiosities of biology. Our exhibit (Birds and Bugs) manned by Kamaryn, Kolton, Cara, Cody, and Athrey drew a steady stream of visitors drawn in my our chicken display.
Darwin Day, commemorating the birth of Charles Darwin, is an annual event at TAMU focused on sharing the wonder of biology with the community. It was in this spirit that our team set out to share some of the research highlights from our lab.
A Deep Dive into Chickens, Mosquitoes, and Germs
The response from the public was overwhelmingly positive, with visitors of all ages expressing their appreciation for the knowledge shared. Our participation in Darwin Day 2024 was our attempt use this public outreach opportunity to highlight the impact of our work on everyday lives of people. By breaking down complex topics into accessible, engaging experiences, we hoped to educate and also inspire a new generation curious minds.
It’s always delightful to see the amazing and unique responses people show when they learn a new fact about the most mundane things in life, and the humble chickens drew in people from all walks of life to learn more about our research. In the words of Charles Darwin, “The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute of man.” One more Darwin Day in the books, and until next time.
